Legislative Update - Critical News

In Montgomery we have been watching and waiting for the Education Trust Fund (ETF) budget to be taken up by the legislature. Earlier Governor Riley introduced a good budget considering the financial situation the state is facing. Governor Riley met with key education leaders before introducing his budget. Although this budget is considerably less than last year's, it will adequately fund PEEHIP and the TRS. However, funds are not available for a 13th check or a COLA for actives or retirees.

Before the legislators begin working on the budget, they need to hear from AERA members. Next week is Spring Break for the legislators, so it would be a good time for them to receive a call back home. It is critical that every senator and representative receive a call requesting their support of the proposed budget. Ask them if they are on board and willing to support Governor Riley's budget. If a legislator will not commit to support this budget, please contact the state office and let us know.

Over the next few weeks Paul Parker, AERA Lobbyist, will work to gain support from those legislators who are not on board.

Again, we are requesting that every member of your lobbying network contact their assigned legislator(s). We will keep you informed by email, mail or on our website, www.aerainc.org. Your assistance is needed now and again as the budget is heard in committee meetings and on the House and Senate floors.

If you have any questions or need more information, please contact the state office.
