AERA Call to Action – Call Your House Member

Members, good news for a change. You may recall that Senator Gerald Dial filed SB3 to provide for a 13th check to TRS retirees. This bill was supported by a number of senators. It was on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday and carried over on the call of the chair. On Thursday Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh came down onto the Senate floor to work with Senator Dial on this bill. Thanks to the work done by Senators Marsh, Dial, and Reed the bill was amended to provide a one-time 13th check for $400 to every retiree. The vote on the amendment was 26 yea; 1 no and 2 abstentions.Senator Marsh made this bill happen. AERA truly appreciates the work of the above mentioned Senators and please be sure to thank them.

SB3 bill has moved to the House of Representative. This bill must be on the fast tract or we will run out of time. SB3 needs to be approved by the House Ways and Means Education Committee listed below before it can be approved by the House. If one of these representatives listed below is your elected official, call them ASAP. We don’t want just one call but a number of calls from concerned education retirees who vote in their district. Ask the committee to support and approve SB3 on Tuesday so the full House can consider the bill before the 2017 session ends!

All other members please contact your House member Friday – Monday. Urge him/her to support SB3.

Education retirees have not received a 13th check since 2007. Retired state employees have received a 13th check in the past few years. This is not what most retirees were hoping for but something is better than nothing. Please have a number of retirees placing calls. We want our message heard.
Your legislator’s contact information is in your Advocacy Training booklet.

Our calls should be polite but persistent. Finish your conversation by asking them to support SB3. Please communicate with your representative that his/her vote will be shared with all education retirees in their district. We can make this happen. Your assistance is appreciated.
