Board of Directors

A Message from the AERA State President

Our Annual Meeting is behind us now. You really missed out on something fantastic if you were not in Birmingham on March 18th. We had a very well planned and fruitful meeting. It was also well attended. Thanks to all members who came!

Having been installed as your new leader, I am both humble and highly honored. I very graciously thank each of you from the bottom of my heart for the confidence that you have placed in me.

Unfortunately, we are faced with some unwelcomed news. The State of Alabama, like other state governments, is feeling the effects of a deteriorating economy. The governor and the state's fiscal officer differ on the amounts of the financial shortfall in Alabama's two major budgets. However, the bottom line is that there is not enough money to fully fund all agencies depending on state allocated funding. Many economists believe that the country is in a recession. And if so, they do not agree on how long it will last-some say 12 months, others predict 16-18 months. (God forbid a repeat of the Great Depression of the 30s.)

AERA's staff, executive board and the Cola Ad Hoc Committee, appointed last year by past president Joe McFerrin, will continue to serve and seek avenues by which retirees can get back to receiving traditional COLAs on a regular basis. This is not to say that we did not appreciate the 13th check. Anything is better than nothing! I feel certain that something positive will come out of this committee because it is made up of dedicated and knowledgeable members.

I urge you to encourage nonmember retirees to join AERA, AEA and NEA-Retired. We need to be unified. We are all in this together. Do not be guilty of anyone saying, "I wasn't asked to join."

I look forward to this being a very positive and productive year in spite of all the challenges ahead. Should you need us, just call. Should you have questions or concerns, let us hear from you. Alone, we can do very little, or, nothing at all; but, conscientiously working together, we can accomplish much.

Sincerely,

Robert E. Davis,
AERA State President
